First edition. Hardback, rebound in full leather by Bickers, school prize binding with the devices of Mary Datchelor Girls School and Clothworkers London to the upper board. All edges marbled. 19 × 12.5cm, 373pp.
An illustrated history of classical Greece from the earliest dwellers, through the Bonds of Greek Union, Lycurgus, the Spartan Wars, Athens, the rise of the Persian Empire and the war between Persia and Athens, the rise and fall of the Athenian Empire, the age of Thebes, and finally to Alexander, the Great Conqueror. Illustrated throughout with drawings and maps, eight of which are in colour.
This copy has a school prize label from the Mary Datchelor Girls' School which has been initialled CER who was Caroline Rigg, the founder of the school.
Condition
There is some rubbing to the joints and the head of the spine but otherwise this copy remains in strong readable condition. There is light spotted foxing to the prelims but the main body of text is in very good, clean condition and the inner binding is secure.
