First edition, first printing. Hardback, bound in yellow cloth with (faint) gilt titling to spine. 22.5 × 14cm, 72pp.
This copy was owned by Robert Liddell and signed by him in Cairo in 1946. Liddell (1908–1992) was a literary critic, biographer, novelist, and travel writer, a member of the Cairo Poets during the Second World War. The Cairo Poets was the name given to serving poets in North Africa, within group were Lawrence Durrell, Robin Fedden, Bernard Spencer and Keith Douglas, and many others.
An early collection by Lawrence Durrell and one that marks an important development in his poetical style and output. A lyrical and evocative collection, and an exploration of innocence, place, and memory.
Condition
A good copy. As is often the case with this title, the edges of the boards and the spine are tanned. There is light spotted foxing to the prelims but the main body of text is in good strong readable condition.
