Hardback, three volumes (complete). Bound in brown faux leather, with gilt titling and five (slightly) raised bands to the spine. Each 26 × 21cm. 697pp, 1009pp, 953pp, with two loose enclosures from the publishers.
The first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica was issued serially in sections from 1768 to 1771. The first bound volume of these sections was completed in 1769, the second in1 770 and the third and last in 1771. Subtitled "A Dictionary of the Arts and Sciences," the set contained 2459 pages and 160 copperplate engravings by Andrew Bell.
This set reproduces those books in facsimile.
Condition
Very good condition, though with some light foxing throughout (this may be facsimile foxing!). The leatherette is in good order but with a light indentation to the top edge of the front board of volume 2, and some minor surface abrasion to the remaining boards.
