This copy has been signed and dedicated by John R Carling to his daughter, Winifred, to the dedication page. The printed dedication of "To My Daughter, Winifred" is followed by "From me, her father, John R Carling" in his handwriting.
The author's fourth novel. A historical thriller set in Russia of the early nineteenth century. The hero, Viscount Wilfrid Courtenay, is a Quixotic character, who helps a princess fend off a cad, helps with a mystery of a Russian officer's parentage, and finds himself caught in a web of espionage, hidden identities, and a conspiracy surrounding the "secret history" of Czar Alexander I.
Illustrated with a frontispiece and one plate—there's no plate index.
John Richard Carling was born c1870 in Manchester and lived until 1950. He lived in Peckham in South London at the time of publication and was making his living as a teacher for the LCC. His output consisted of five novels, historical potboilers and some with a slightly supernatural edge. His daughter Winifred, born c1890, was also a teacher with LCC.
Condition
A good copy, and scarce to find signed. There is slight loss to the page edges of the preliminary blanks, and the text has some tanning and light spotted foxing, and with one or two pages with edgewear to the fore-edge but remaining in good readable condition.
