Full title: Pistis Sophia, A Gnostic Miscellany. Being for the most part Extracts from the Books of the Saviour, to which are added Excerpts from a cognate Literature
This is the English translation of the Pistis Sophia, the most extensive Gnostic scripture available until the discovery of Nag Hammadi texts in 1945. The Pistis Sopha is a startling blend of primitive Christianity and Hellenic Paganism, with other elements such as reincarnation, Astrology, Mystery religion and Hermetic magic. The Goddess makes an appearance in the guise of Sophia.
In Gnosticism, Sophia (Wisdom) is a divine feminine being, an Aeon or emanation from the Godhead, but in the text Pistis Sophia, she is a specific figure who falls from the divine realm due to a misguided desire to know the highest Light, becoming trapped in the material world and needing redemption. The title "Pistis Sophia" means "Faith of Wisdom," referring to her journey of faith and struggle for salvation, with Jesus teaching the apostles and Mary Magdalene about her restoration within this significant Gnostic scripture.
