First published in 1901, Gummere's Beginnings of Poetry explores the origins and early evolution of poetry as a social institution in human culture. The author was a champion of the theory of communal composition for early forms of poetry, such as popular balladry, and suggesting that they originated from the spontaneous, collective expression of the community before the rise of individual authorship.
