A volume from the Petite Bibliotheque Charpentier of Victor Hugo's poetic works. es Contemplations was first published in 1856 and consists of 156 poems in which Hugo experiments with autobiography in verse. The poems are, at times, intensely reflective, and also forms part homage to his daughter Léopoldine who drowned in the Seine in 1843. The collection is in two parts, firstly Autrefois, which contains poems from 1830 to 1843, and then Aujourd'hui which covers from 1843 to 1855.
Condition
An attractive copy. There is some scuffing to the spine and boards, more so to volume two, but the contents are in very good condition.
