Printing Details

This is a framed and glazed hand-signed photograph of novelist Denis Mackail (1892–1971) and his Pekingese, Topsy. The frame measures 27 × 19cm, with a frame width of about 1cm. The photograph is laid on black card and tissue. Signed by Denis Mackail top right and dated 1929, and by Harrods to the bottom right border.

Denis Mackail was an author, popular in the first half of the twentieth century, and best known for his novel, Greenery Street. He was later to write Life With Topsy (1942), a record of life with his Pekingese dogs (Topsy is also in the photograph).

He was the grandson of Edward Burne-Jones, brother of novelist Angela Thirkell, and counted P G Wodehouse and A A Milne among his close friends (Wodehouse dedicated Summer Lightning to him).

Condition

Very good condition. There is a little dust trapped behind the glass along the bottom edge but otherwise a very nice signed photograph. A label to the reverse shows it was framed by Mucklows of Leicester Square.
