Illustrated with 9 fine colour illustrations by Alastair, this is an attractive copy of Oscare Wilde's Salome, his play about the attempted seduction of Jokanaan (John the Baptist) by Salome, step-daughter of Herod Antipas; her dance of the seven veils; the execution of Jokanaan at Salome's instigation; and her death on Herod's orders. This copy includes a bibliography of the play.
The play was first published in 1891, but due to it showing Biblical characters it was banned from the British stage until 1931. However, it remained hugely popular on the continent.
Condition
Good plus condition. The front joint is starting to show a little wear but is still firmly attached, and with light rubbing to the edges. The contents are in strong readable condition and all plates are present but there is a small stain to the bottom of the pages not affecting text or images. As mentioned, the original card covers have been bound in and these show a little wear.
