This is a framed and glazed hand-signed photograph of Michael Arlen (1895–1956), the Bulgarian-born essaying, novelist and playwright. The frame measures 21 × 26.5cm, with a frame width of 1cm. The photographer is unknown, but is possibly Bassano, who took frequent portraits of Arlen.
The photograph has been signed and dedicated by Michael Arlen lower right "For Frere Reeves from Michael Arlen, Nov 1928". Frere-Reeves (also known as Alexander Stuart Frere) was a British publisher who was highly influential in the interwar and post-Second World War period. He was chairman of the board of William Heinemann Ltd. Heinemann published Arlen's works.
Michael Arlen was a successful novelist who rose to prominence in the 1920s. He became an international celebrity after the publication of his novel The Green Hat in 1924, a scandalous story of the Bright Young Things.
Condition
The photograph is in very good condition for age, as is the frame. A label to the reverse shows it was framed by A J Mucklow & Sons of Leicester Square, London.
