Printing Details
First edition. Hardback, printed titling and design to upper board. 22.5 × 14.5cm, unpaginated.
A fairly rare illustrated collection of characters, spirits, sprites and other creatures from British folklore, each with a superb black and white pen and ink illustration by Cecily Peele, and accompanied by some relevant poetry (Shakespeare, Herrick, Chaucer etc). Included are the banshee, Bwg of Wales, Lubberkin, dragon, elf, Will o'the Wisp, Phooka of Ireland, Hairy One of the Isle of Man, and many more.
The author, Cecily Peele, was an eccentric character. She co-founded the Alley Workshops at 65 St Giles, Oxford in the early 1920s and produced a range of handcrafted items from toys to jewellery, pottery, prints, maps and scarves. She served as an air raid warden and a Red Cross auxiliary during World War II while continuing her craftwork. Her eccentricities included walking her pet goat on a leash.
Condition
Good condition only, but a scarce copy. The boards are a bit tanned and grubby, and there is damage to the bottom 7cm of the spine where the front joint has opened. The inner binding is secure but the pages lightly foxed throughout. The book remains in strong readable condition, and the illustrations are superb.
