John Gielgud's copy, and a pencil inscription to the ffep reads 'John Gielgud with fond love from Mother, June 31, 1934. "(Spring 1600)"' Spring 1600 was a play which marked Gielgud's managerial debut in which he sponsored and directed another actor's play (Emlyn Williams).
The title translates as 'American Theatre and Cinema: Two Cultural History Essays'. Profusely illustrated with colour and black and white plates, this book studies the rise and progress of German theatre and cinema. And quite early in Gielgud's career.
Condition
Fair to poor. Whilst the book remains in readable condition, the blue cloth binding is worn. There is rubbing to the corners, and the rear joint is split open. Heavy fraying to spine ends.
