Printing Details
First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 12.5cm, 74pp.
A rare first printing of Carola Oman's first book, a collection of poems inspired by her service as a VAD nurse in the Great War in Oxford, Dorset, London and France in 1918–1919. Her poetry stands up very well to her contemporaries, and is divided into two sections. The first is 'In France and Belgium' and contains poems such as 'In the Ypres Sector', 'The Menin Road, March 1919', and 'Christmas 1918', and the second section is 'England, In Hospital', including 'London, 1918 (April)', and 'The Lament of Many Women.'
She was a lifelong friend of Georgette Heyer and moved away from poetry to concentrate on historical fiction.
Condition
The book is in remarkably good condition, with clean pages and secure binding. The blue cloth boards are very clean but has a bump to the lower corner of the upper board. The dustwrapper is good, with some minor loss to the edges and tanning to the spine, and comprehensive surface abrasion to the front but this hasn't affected the printed titling. Priced to wrapper's spine, and now within a protective sleeve.
