This is an original Japanese watercolour on paper by an artist named Kawko, mounted but not framed. The whole measures 35.5 × 43cms, with the image measuring 23 × 28.5cms. Artist's stamp and title in Japanese lower left. Undated c1900.

A label to the rear of the image reads "Camelia, Artist: Kwako. Imported from Japan by the J B Millet Co,. Boston" J B Millet were a firm of American publishers who specialized in Japanese material, including books, photographs and original art.

This delicate and charming watercolour shows a camelia flower on a branch with leaves.

Condition

This artwork is in good condition for age. There is a little wrinkling to the top edge, and some tanning to the paper in the background. The subtle colours of the camelia remain undiminished. The image could possibly benefit from being remounted as there are some surface abrasions. A lovely watercolour that would look wonderful framed.
