This delicate original watercolour captures a single camellia branch in the tradition of Japanese botanical study. Painted circa 1900, the piece showcases the subtle colour palette characteristic of the era.
This painting is part of the 20th-century American fascination with Japanese aesthetics. A label to the rear states it was imported by J.B. Millet Co. of Boston. Led by Josiah Byron Millet, this firm was a key figure in the tastes, importing Japanese material, including books, photographs and original art.
Condition
This artwork is in good condition for age. There is a little wrinkling to the top edge, and some tanning to the paper in the background. The subtle colours of the camelia remain undiminished. The image could possibly benefit from being remounted as there are some surface abrasions. A lovely watercolour that would look wonderful framed.
Books are currently zero-rated for duty (as of April 2026), so the price shown is the price you pay.
