This copy belonged to and has been signed by Admiral Bonham in 1898. This was Charles Wright Bonham (1817–1910), uncle of the author. He entered the Navy in 1832, served at the sieges of Oporto and Tripoli, was on the Pique when it crossed the Atlantic rudderless after running aground at Labrador, then served in China, Borneo, and the taking of Maloodo. In 1863 he suffered an eye injury on board the Victory which lead to his retirement. Admiral Bonham has also made several marginal and textual annotations throughout the book. He is mentioned in the book, and a later hand has annotated his death.
A genealogical survey of the Bonham family in Essex (also with reference to the Wiltshire Bonhams) concentrating on the descedants of Thomas Bonham living in Essex in about 1500, and the author's great great grandfather, Samuel Bonham, born about 1677. With three family tress, two of which are fold-out.
The author spent a life in the consular service and the H.M. Consul at Calais at the time of publication. He was also the author E M Delafield's grandfather.
This book also comes with a manuscript copy of approximately half the text written in 1942. Neatly handwritten, recto only with occasional annotation verse, and running to 31 pages.
Condition
The book is in good condition for age. There is light bumping to the boards, and scattered foxing throughout but otherwise remaining in strong readable condition. The 1940s manuscript copy is in very good condition.
