Printing Details
This is a card page from an album, with a large albumen print on one side and five smaller photographs on the other. The card measures 35 × 26.5, and the albumen print is 26.5 × 21cm. Believed to date to the late 1890s.
On one side is a superb photographic study of a rather dashing / rakish looking Victorian jockey with moustache sitting in his jockey's outfit astride horse, which according to a pencil inscription is called Elegy. On the reverse are five smaller photographs: 1. a shot of a race at Match Day in February 1898 showing spectators and two horses galloping towards the finishing line, an pencil inscription reads "Abbushir beating Garry Owen", 2 & 3. Two action shots of a horseman taking a jump (with Cairo written underneath, though whether this is the place or the horse's name...), and 4 & 5. Two photographs of a polo player in action, with a not particularly decipherable pencil annotation.
Condition
The card has spotted foxing and marking, and is a little wavy and a bit chipped to one edge. The albumen print is in good condition and would look superb framed. The five smaller photographs are all a bit faded and with a little tanning.
