"In this subtle novel Colin Murry captures the terror and splendour of an intense spiritual experience: for those who undergo it and for those who, by observing, are drawn into its vortex. Warwick Sturgess is famous author, ageing and no longer inspired, who lives as the pivot of two other lives. Vikki, his unmarried sister who tells the story, is tied to him by an unshakeable bond of love; Margaret, his second wife, has no affinity with him yet feels starved of the love he cannot give her. Into their household comes Isobel, a young girl whose strangely luminous intelligence enables her to enter those regions of the spirit where Warwick has for a long time been alone."
