Second edition (first printing in The Mariner's Library series). Hardback in dustwrapper. 19 × 12.5cm, 180pp.
When Vertue XXXV crossed the Atlantic Ocean from east to west she was one of the smallest vessels ever to have done so. Humphrey Barton and his one companion undertook this adventure partly to satisfy an inborn urge to challenge the "Western Ocean", partly with the object of earning dollars. His description of the hurricane with struck Vertue XXXV when almost on the last lap shows by how small a margin their purpose was achieved. In this book lies the vivid record not only of the voyage itself but of the expert technique and life-long experience which went into every detail of the boat and her equipment. The author's long experience in small boat sailing is backed by an intimate knowledge of yacht design, construction and equipment, acquired first-hand in his professional capacity of a yacht surveyor, and as partner in one of the world's leading firms of yacht designers.
Condition
The book is in very good condition, with an inoffensive gift inscription to the front pastedown (hidden by the front flap of the wrapper). The dustwrapper is rubbed to the edges and joints, a little marked but in good, sound condition.
