Printing Details

First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 22 × 14.5cm, 162pp.

This book is an attempt to trace the development of man and his effect on the landscape of Lakeland from early times to the present, from the Neolithic period to the National Park. The Lakeland landscape is the product of volcanic activity and earth movements, of moulding by ice and water, but at the same time is one that has been modified by man's activities. The book covers megalithic circles, Bronze Age cairns, Roman forts and roads, Anglian and Scandinavian crosses, early mining (the spoil tips of the German miners of the sixteenth century and the moss-grown copper mines of Coniston), the slate quarries, the whitewashed farms, the insistent lines of forestry plantations, and the silent reservoirs which make up the present land use pattern.

Condition

The book itself is in very good condition with secure binding and clean pages. The dustwrapper is rubbed a little to joints and edges and has been neatly price clipped but is otherwise good.
