Printing Details

First edition. Hardback, professionally rebound in burgundy pebbled cloth with leather title label to spine lettered in git. Top edge gilt. 26 × 16cm, xvi + 580pp, map.

A rare history of Hawkshead in the Lake District, now in Cumbria but previously forming part of Lancashire. Chapters include: 1. Descriptive, 2. History, 3. Archaeology and Architecture, 4. The Dalesman, 5. Industries and Occupations, 6. Survivals and Folklore, 7. Dialect, Place Names and Family Names, 8. Biographies, 9. Parish Books and Accounts, 10. The Grammar School, and 11. Olla Podrida (this last chapter being a casserole of little snippets about the parish—geology, earthquakes, storms etc). The book is illustrated with photographs and drawings, and has a fold-out colour map to the rear of the book.

Condition

A lovely copy in very good condition indeed for age. The rebinding has been done to a very high standard with new pastedowns and endpapers. There is a little foxing to one or two of the illustrations where there is a tissue guard) but otherwise the book is very clean throughout. The map is in very good order and the book is free from inscription.
