A huge 1880s dictionary. The introduction covers a brief history of the English language, pronunciation, and orthography. The main body of text for the dictionary is followed by a supplement of additional words, and further guides to the pronunciation of Scripture, Greek, Latin, Modern Geographical proper names, etymology of modern geographical words etc etc and further 60+ pages of illustrations.
Condition
Good condition for age. The title page has been relaid with a neat repair where bound in, as has the frontispiece of Webster. Some fairly heavy foxing to the prelims but the main body of text is good, clean condition, with some tanning returning towards the end of the book. The inner binding is secure. The binding is in good order with light rubbing to the joints and spine ends. A heavy book at nearly 5kg.
