Full title: The History of Heraldry, containing Inquiries into its Origin, with an Account of its Rise and Progress in England, and of the Various Institutions Connected Therewith. To which is added, A Complete Glossary of Terms used in the Science of Heraldry, with Explanatory Engravings
Illustrated with a frontispiece of William IV's armorial bearings, this is a study of the history of heraldry for Kings, Queens, the nobility, gentlemen, rules of precendency etc, followed by a lengthy gloosary of the terms used in heraldry (eg Fess—one of the ordinaries, formed by two horizontal lines; Wolf-Trap, a German Bearing; Man-Tifer or Manticoram, an imaginary beast). The glossary is illustrated by giving reference to the pages of plates to the rear which contains well over a thousand examples of heraldic devices.
Condition
Fair. The book remains perfectly readable but the covers are faded and rubbed, and the title page and first few pages of text have been repaired , are badly creased, and have marginal tears. The main part of the text is in better condition, some straining to the binding but all pages still well-attached. The plates are in good order.
