Printing Details

Undated, c1946. Assumed first edition. Hardback, bound in blue cloth with gilt titling to upper board. 21 × 17cm, 90pp.

Not signed as such but this copy comes with ephemera concerning one of the fallen. This book belonged to the family of Second or Third Officer George Stubbins Strachen (both ranks are given), of the Merchant Navy who sailed with the Currie Line. He died in hospital in the Middle East in July 1942 from injuries sustained when his ship, SS Zealand, was sunk by an enemy air attack. He is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, and is listed on page 76. Loosely inserted there is 1. a receipt from the Imperial War Graves Commission dated 1953 (for a personal inscription), 2. an order form for the IWGC Roll of Honour book for Ramleh, 3. A typed letter from J D M Currie, the chairman of the Currie Line, who states he is enclosing a letter of General Auchinleck's letter to Captain Branagan (this not present), and 4. a black and white photograph of George Strachan and a chief engineer in the Cape, annotated in pencil to the rear.

This book contains the records of 82 servicemen from the Arbroath district who lost their lives in the Second World War, many with a small portrait photograph. Each entry gives a small amount of family history, service record, and where they died.

Condition

This copy is in very good condition for age. Some light surface wear to the covers but the contents are very good.
