Printing Details

First US edition. Hardback in dustwrapper. 19.5 × 13.5cm. viii, 200pp, iv.

From the wrapper, "Disguised as a German citizen and carrying fake papers, Werner Knop crossed secretly into the Russian Zone of Germany. Although he was smuggled across the border by the anti-Communist underground and assisted by skilled and determined conspirators, he was nevertheless told that his chances of getting deep into the Russian zone were fifty-fifty, and of remaining undetected once he was there were only twenty-eighty. This book is the full, exciting story of what Knop saw, heard, and experienced on his hazardous mission. Knop entered from the British zone at Braunlage, and crawled, dodged, and bluffed his way to Weimar and Jena, where he discovered what the Russians had done to the great Zeiss plant and its workers. In Leipzig and Dresden, where he had prearranged appointments with anti-Communists willing to take the fantastic risk of talking to him, he found out how the Russians were inflaming the Germans with hate against the United States, how the Soviet slyly woos former important Nazis to build an ominous military force, and how the people are held in line. Knop fraternized with unsuspecting Red Army officers, and discovered their astonishing ignorance and their half-wistful, half-frightened attitude towards the USA. Most daring of all, he entered the forbidden zone of slave camps and uranium mines at Chemnitz and Plauen, and witnessed the fanatical precautions and police measures established by the Russians. He finally escaped into the US zone near Hof."

Condition

The book is in good, strong readable condition, with some tanning to the endpapers. The inner binding is secure. The dustwrapper is rather scruffy, with heavy creasing and edgewear including some loss at the spine ends but is now within a protective sleeve.
