This copy with the bookplate of Sydney Burney by Lee-Elliott. Burney (1878–1951) was a British art and antiques dealer, Lee-Elliott (Theyre Lee Elliott, 1903–1988) was an English artist responsible for the design of well-known art deco logos (eg Speedbird), and was a stage designer for the theatre and ballet. This bookplate is quite early in his career, being dated to the 1930s, as per the Victoria and Albert Museum archive.
A study of the monastic orders seen through the eyes and works of artists of the time. This volume formed the second title of Jameson's Sacred and Legendary Art books. Illustrated in monotone.
Condition
Fair to good. Whilst the book remains readable, and with a nice provenance, the inner binding is strained throughout. The hinges have been neatly reinforced with tape. No pages are loose but there is notable movement in the binding. The green cloth is good with a few small spotted marks to the upper board.
