From the library of British artist David Heathcote, with his handwritten name to the inside front cover. This copy from the library of David Heathcote (1931–2025). Heathcote was a distinguished British artist, educator, and scholar of African art history. After training at the Slade (under Keith Vaughan and Claude Rogers), he spent two decades teaching in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and then in Nigeria, where he became a preeminent authority on Hausa embroidery and West African textiles. His African collection is now in the British Museum. He returned to Kent and to continue painting and teaching. His first solo exhibition was held in Zimbabwe in 1961. Other notable exhibitions and galleries include the Young Contemporaries Exhibition at the RBA Gallery in London in 1958, the Ahmadu Bello University and British Council Galleries in Nigeria, the Beckel Odille Boïcos Gallery in Paris, and at GV Art in London.
A radical innovator and pioneer of new artistic form German expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner co-founded the Brücke movement and produced some of the most outstanding woodcuts and powerful expressionist works of the 20th century. He committed suicide after having his work condemned as "degenerate" by the Nazis. This book features a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his cultural and historical importance, a concise biography, and approximately 100 colour illustrations.
