Printing Details

First French edition. Hardback, bound in the original burgundy textured cloth with simple gilt titling to upper board. 22.5 × 15cm, 248pp. French text.

A seminal work in the history of physical theatre, L’Art Mimique is Charles Aubert’s masterpiece on the mechanics of human expression. Far more than a simple instruction manual for the stage, this 1901 first edition serves as a psychological map of how the body betrays the mind.

Aubert treats the human face and form as an instrument, breaking down complex emotions—from subtle irony to explosive rage—into a "vocabulary" of movement. It is a precursor to modern studies in non-verbal communication and was a primary resource for the pioneers of Commedia dell'arte and early 20th-century pantomime.

Illustrated throughout with over 200 line drawings. These plates detail the "geometry" of facial expressions and the tension of body movements. There is a concluding chapter on the intersection of gesture and Classical Ballet.

Condition

A rare first printing. The book is in good condition, with some sunning to the spine and rear board. The pages are comprehensively tanned throughout with the odd spot of blotchy foxing but remains in strong readable condition.
