This copy has been signed by the Commanding Officer of the Battalion, and his officers, to a British officer, Lieutenant Harrison. ""Hommage du Commandant Marion et des officiers du 6e Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins à Monsieur le Lieutenant Harrison du Corps Royal du Génie Britannique qui, pendant son séjour parmi nous, se montra un excellent camarade et un bon alpin. Grenoble le 17 Janvier 1926." (Trans: "A tribute from Commandant Marion and the officers of the 6th Battalion of Alpine Chasseurs to Lieutenant Harrison of the British Royal Engineers who, during his stay among us, proved himself to be an excellent comrade and a good mountaineer. Grenoble, January 17, 1926")
There are eighteen signatures in total. The French Commandant, Charles Louis Pierre Marion (1887–1944), came from a long line of soldiers and served with distinction in the Great War (he also won medals for dressage at the 1928 and 1932 Olympics).
There are also two communications from British Army officials to Lt. Harrison which state that decoration awarded him from the French government were considered a personal trophy and not sanctioned to be worn on parade. These are also dated 1926 when Lt Harrison was serving in Poona, India.
A Great War history of the 6th Bataillon Alpin de Chasseurs a Pied, a battalion of French mountain troops and their service in the Great War where they fought on the Western Front and aided in the evacuation of Serbian troops from Corfu. The book also contains a fifteen page Roll of Honour naming the men killed or died of wounds (tues ou morts des suites de leurs blessures) during the Great War.
Condition
This rare copy is in good condition for age. There is some light damage to the spine and the pages are tanned throughout but otherwise the book remains in strong readable condition.
