A significant work by Mary Packer Harris (1891–1978), the influential artist and educator who was a central figure in the South Australian modern art scene. A Quaker and a visionary, Harris was known for her 'modernist-mystic' approach.
A series of essays on French and English art history from the seventeenth century in France to the nineteenth century in England, Scottish art as a prelude to the birth of Impressionism, the modern movement (Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin etc), and on to other art forms such as Russian ballet and modern art, stained glass etc. Of particular note is Harris’s early and progressive advocacy for the integration of Aboriginal design and themes within modern Australian art and architecture. The book is illustrated with monochrome plates, and the colour frontis.
