Printing Details
First edition. Paperback, with wraparound photographic wrap. 25.5 × 22cm, 128pp.
Published to accompany Prince’s summer 2008 Serpentine Gallery exhibition, which served as a European continuation and expansion of his major 2007–2008 retrospective, Spiritual America, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Rather than functioning purely as a standard retrospective monograph, Prince treated the volume largely as an autonomous artist's book, containing "Bringing It All Back Home" which features a characteristic photographic essay / introductory sequence compiled by Prince, weaving together studio shots, installation views, source imagery, and finished works. The main body of the work is Prince's work which captures core strands of his signature appropriation and "re-photographing" practice, including his Cowboys, Nurse Paintings, Jokes, custom car hood sculptures, and the text section at the rear of the volume, which includes exhibition documentation and conversations curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Julia Peyton-Jones.
