The stories detail the turbulent arrival of young Harry Wharton at Greyfriars, introducing his initial proud, hot-tempered friction with his uncle Colonel Wharton and his new schoolmates, as well as showing the early, unrefined versions of characters who became so well known, including the initial appearance of Billy Bunter, Frank Nugent, Bob Cherry, and Mr. Quelch.
