In Guild Lecture No. 130, psychiatrist and Jungian analyst Dr. Robert F. Hobson offers a compelling depth-psychological examination of the messianic "Once and Future King" motif. Drawing on Arthurian legend, comparative mythology, and clinical psychiatry, Hobson analyzes the sleeping ruler and the sterile Wasteland as potent archetypal symbols of depression, spiritual alienation, and psychological renewal. He warns against projecting this inner myth onto external political or religious figures, demonstrating how true healing requires internalizing the authority of the Self to overcome personal and collective crisis. A classic paper on myth, depression, and pastoral care.
