First edition. Limited to 500 copies, this being one of 425 (no 309) printed on chiffon Americain velin paper. Quarter cloth, boards with illustration by Masson. 34 × 26cm, 100pp. French language.

Le Serpent dans la Galere is a poignant reflection on exile, wartime Europe, and the plight of intellectual and artistic life during World War II. Written by the art critic, essayist, and Matisse's son-in-law Georges Duthuit, and illustrated by the Surrealist artist André Masson, of which there are 13 full-page black-and-white plates alongside 24 drawings within the text.

Condition

Good condition. There is rubbing and bumping to the corners, and the book has a slightly musty odour but the pages are clean and the inner binding is sound.
