The Far Cry follows 14-year-old Teresa Digby, an awkward, neglected, and quiet teenager raised primarily by a strict aunt. Teresa’s father, Mr. Digby—an elderly, domineering, and difficult man—suddenly learns that his ex-wife plans to return to England and might seek custody of Teresa. To prevent her mother from "claiming" her, he impulsively drags Teresa on a long voyage to India, even though neither parent has ever shown genuine affection for her.
