This copy was Jungian analyst and author Irene de Castillejo's own copy, with her signature to the front cover. Born in 1885, she married Spanish jurist and professor Jose Castillejo but had to flee Madrid at the start of the Spanish Civil War. In 1945, after living in London, she studied Jungian psychology in Zurich working with Carl Gustav Jung, Emma Jung and Toni Wolff, then returning to London to found a psychotherapy practice specialising in the role of women in the world of today. She is perhaps best known for her book 'Knowing Woman: A Feminine Psychology', published posthumously in 1973.
In Guild Lecture No. 51, Jungian analyst Barbara Hannah uses Marie Hay's 1904 gothic novella The Evil Vineyard—a work Jung called the prime example of a "woman's plot"—to deliver a compelling study of the Animus and literary creation. Analyzing the story of a young woman's fatal marriage and isolation in a haunted Italian vineyard, Hannah demonstrates how an unintegrated animus can hijack a woman's creative imagination and life choices. She explores how unexamined projections convert potential spiritual growth into tragic compulsion, offering a fascinating intersection of depth psychology, feminist literary criticism, and gothic horror.
