This copy was Jungian analyst and author Irene de Castillejo's own copy, with her signature to the front cover. Born in 1885, she married Spanish jurist and professor Jose Castillejo but had to flee Madrid at the start of the Spanish Civil War. In 1945, after living in London, she studied Jungian psychology in Zurich working with Carl Gustav Jung, Emma Jung and Toni Wolff, then returning to London to found a psychotherapy practice specialising in the role of women in the world of today. She is perhaps best known for her book 'Knowing Woman: A Feminine Psychology', published posthumously in 1973.
In Guild Lecture No. 75, Jungian analyst Dr. Amy I. Allenby offers a perceptive depth-psychological critique of modern busyness and spiritual exhaustion. Allenby demonstrates that the chronic feeling of "having no time" functions as a defensive ego mechanism designed to avoid inner stillness and unresolved psychic conflict. Contrasting linear, quantitative time (Chronos) with qualitative, meaningful time (Kairos), she explores how constant external activity suppresses anxiety while severing the individual from the objective unconscious. A resonant post-war paper examining hurry sickness, the fear of inner silence, and the restoration of contemplative depth in pastoral care and analytical psychology.
