Hamerton's critical study of figurative art, exploring how artists depict the human form to convey moral, historical, spiritual, and aesthetic values across six main divisions including religious art, historical art, portraiture, and the beauty of the human form.
The book is illustrated with forty-six plates in line-engraving, mezzotint, photogravure, hyalography, etching, and wood-engraving.
Condition
A fair copy. The book is ex-library but not offensively so, with stamps to the reverse of the title page, and indistinct stamp to the pages' fore-edge and a partial label to the rear pastedown. The book, whilst remaining in good readable condition, and with all plates present, has rubbing and bumping to the corners, and fraying to the rear joint. Light toning to some pages, front hinge starting to crack, and tanning to the page edges.
