A study of Lamoral, Count of Egmont (1522–1568), a prominent general and statesman in the Habsburg Netherlands. Despite remaining a loyal Catholic and serving King Philip II of Spain, Egmont sought to temper the harsh Spanish persecution of Dutch Protestants. In 1567, the Duke of Alba (Duc d'Albe) was sent to restore order, establishing the notorious Council of Troubles (Conseil des Troubles). Egmont was arrested, charged with high treason, and executed by beheading in the Grand-Place of Brussels in 1568—an event that galvanized the Dutch Revolt (Eighty Years' War).
De Bavay used his position as Prosecutor General to unearth original judicial manuscripts archived at Mons, compiling the original interrogations, accusations, and court records into this work alongside his legal analysis.
Condition
Good condition for age. There is a little movement to the binding and some rubbing to the spine and boards but otherwise remaining in strong readable condition.
