A wonderful tale of Humgruffin, a giant who lives in Rameslie in Sussex (Brede, just north of Hastings). He falls under the influence of an evil crow who wants to make him as evil as possible, mostly by eating children, tricking churchmen. A local child has a dream in which he is told the only way to kill the giant is with a wooden saw made from the trees of Ramslie. The children get Humgruffin drunk on a barrel of strong local beer, he passes out on a bridge the children saw him in half (East Sussex children on one side, West Sussex children on the other). The crow escaped to carry on his wickedness elsewhere... The tale is superbly illustrated by Dave brown (a spider appearing in most of the drawings). A four page section at the back of the book tells the true story of Humgruffin: the alleged deeds of Sir Goddard Oxenbridge (the Brede Giant) whose story is echoed in this tale.
