A biography of Gerald Gardiner, Baron Gardiner, who served as Harold Wilson’s Lord Chancellor from 1964 to 1970 and was arguably one of the most radical legal reformers of the 20th century, written by the pioneering British film director and screenwriter Muriel Box, who was also Gardiner’s second wife (they married in 1970).
Gardiner had an impact on many cases of the mid twentieth century, including defending Penguin Books in the 1960 Lady Chatterley's Lover obscenity trial, the establishment of the Law Commission in 1965, and tireless campaigning for the abolition of capital punishment.
