This is an original fashion colour illustration, showing a you girl wearing a summer dress. It dates from the late thirties. The paper measures approx. 38 × 52 cm, and is in pencil and watercolour / gouache. The pattern on the dress has been meticulously painted in.
This is a summer play-dress or day-dress. It has crisp vertical pin-tucks on the bodice, small puffed sleeves, a matching fabric belt, and a softly pleated, knee-length flared skirt. The square-shouldered silhouette prevalent in adult wear is subtly echoed in the structured gathers of the small puff sleeves. The pattern has been hand painted in detail. Underneath, in pencil, the artist has written "Design for a 9 year old child"—in European style handwriting.

This artwork is in very good condition, there is some ruffling to the edges and a red ink stain to the left hand side.
