This is an original fashion colour illustration, showing a lady wearing an elegant garden party dress dress. It dates from the late thirties. The paper measures approx. 30 × 43 cm, and is in pencil and watercolour / gouache. The pattern of the dress has been painted in great detail. A neat outline of a horse has been drawn in behind the lady, so perhaps a dress for a day at the races...
This is an elegant afternoon dress or "garden party" gown. It features the signature late-30s high, puffed, and structured short sleeve heads, which are finished here with a delicate white ruffled cuff. The bodice has a high, prim neck with a crisp white ruffled collar and a central button placket featuring tiny red buttons. It has a wide, vibrant red cummerbund or contoured sash to dramatically accentuate a tiny, corseted waistline. The dress pattern is tiny polka dots which have been meticulously painted in. She wears a flat, wide-brimmed straw picture hat, cocked at a steep angle. It is trimmed with a matching red ribbon band and a structured vertical bow at the crown.
