Printing Details

This is a handwritten letter signed by the English music hall singer Marie Lloyd, dated Dec 12, 1902 and sent from her London home address of Granville Lodge, King Henry's Road, Regent's Park, NE. It is on printed headed paper and folded once. When folded it measure 18 × 11.5cm.

The letter reads "Dec 12/02. Dear Mr Hibbert. Am extremely sorry but I haven't the time to give you a story, as I am fearfully busy rehearsing also with panto, dresses. Wishing you the compliments of the season, Yours sincerely, Mari Lloyd".

Marie Lloyd (1870–1922) was the undisputed star of the British music hall era. Known for her sharp wit, "saucy" performances, and immense stage presence, she became a cultural icon who represented the spirit of the London working class. She was frequently criticised by the theatre reviewers of the age as her act incorporated both innuendo and double entendre. Some of her best known songs were "The Boy I Love is Up in the Gallery", "My Old Man (Said Follow the Van)", and "Oh! Mr Porter". By the time of this letter, she was at the height of her fame. She had separated from her first husband, the alcoholic and abusive Percy Courtenay, and was beginning a relationship with fellow music hall star Alec Hurley (whom she would later marry) and by 1902 they were living together in Granville Lodge.

Condition

The letter itself is in good condition, with some tanning to the fold. The blank rear has some red marking but the handwritten side remains clear.
