Printing Details

First thus. Hardback, rebound in blue cloth with simple gilt titling to spine. 16 × 11.5cm, 330pp. *This title was volume six in Conard's Standard Collection of British and American Authors, a series he launched in 1915 to fill the gap after the German publisher Bernhard Tauchnitz was unable to publish British and American authors during the Great War.

The first volume in Tarkington's Growth trilogy, and the book that marked his shift from writing light, popular romances to more serious, socially conscious "Midwestern Realism." The Turmoil is set in a small, quiet city (believed to be based on the author’s hometown of Indianapolis) that is quickly being transformed into a bustling, money-making nest of competitors and “the worshippers of Bigness", it is a narrative of loss and change, a love story, and a warning about the potential evils of materialism, as the book chronicles two midwestern families trying to cope with the onset of industrialization.

Condition

This copy is in very good condition. There is a little mottled fading to the blue cloth boards but the contents are clean and the inner binding is secure. Neat previous owner's name to the half-title.
