This copy carries the bookplate, signature and gift inscription of Stewart Valdar of Hampstead. Valdar (1917–2007), a Communist (later Labour) Party member and journalist, he edited the Hampstead News and the Marylebone Record as well as a sub-editor on the Daily Herald and Sunday Times. In his political campaigning, he never sought high office, preferring to be "a foot soldier of the revolution".

An important selection of types by eminent European type designers, collected together by Swiss typographer Rudolf Hostettler. It shows book faces, title faces, and with a table of origin of the types.
Condition
Quite a scarce first edition, but this copy in fair condition only. The binding is rubbed and bumped to the spine, with some peeling way at the joints. Covers marked, corners bumped. Foxing to endpapers (front and rear), the main body of text in much better condition but pages 61—64 with some red ink spills (remaining readable).
