This is a delightful original painting of an artist at his easel in the Essex countryside around Petches Bridge and Great Bardfield. It is oil on board, and in a circular wooden frame, glazed. The frame has a diameter of of approx 25.5cm, and the painting is 18.5cm.
The back of the painting is card covered wood and reads "John H Newman & Jinny, Petches Bridge, by Gilbert Williams, for Mark Newman".
Gilbert Trocke Williams (1879–1928) was an art teacher who studied at the Chelsea School of Art. The sitter, John Harker Newman, was his brother in law. Mark Newman was his son.
Condition
The painting is in very good condition for age. The frame had started to loosen where joined but this has been filled with some glue some years ago. It had been gilded but this has rubbed off for the most part. The paper backing is torn but remains readable.
