Printing Details

Undated, c1855. Second edition. Hardback, bound in blue buckram with gilt titling and decoration to spine. 18.5 × 11cm, 367pp with frontispiece, illustrated title & printed title.

This copy belonged to the Whatman family of Vinters in Maidstone. Vinters was a grand country house in north east Maidstone (demolished in 1956, only parkland survives). It belonged to the Whatman family, a prosperous papermaking family who produced their paper at the famous Turkey Court Paper Mill (also in Maidstone). This copy is signed by Louise Whatman, the widow of the last make Whatman to live at Vinters. After her death it passed to her daughter who lived nearby.

A mid-Victorian novel by the prolific Scottish author Catherine D Bell who also wrote under the name "Cousin Kate". A quick glance through and it appears to be the standard novel of Victorian behaviour: loyalty to family and God etc etc

Condition

A good copy for age. Some rubbing to the blue cloth, tanning and foxing to the title pages but the main body of text is in good readable condition.
