"A comprehensive study of Scotland's eighteenth-century gravestones, lavishly illustrated with over one hundred and twenty photographs. Each of these stones, and hundreds of others which are worthy of recording and of preservation, has its own special identity: the common identity which they share is the way they reflect life of eighteenth-century Scotland. These stones speak of a time when the minds of and hearts of common people were filled with superstition, current religious beliefs, hopes and fears; a time when there was a major preoccupation with the struggle to live. Historically and socially a fascinating book for students of the period, and an essential guidebook for the discerning tourist."
