Holmes believes the soul is not a religious or dogmatic concept but a vital, living presence within each person and sees traditional schooling as suppressive of the inner life, creativity, and individuality of the child and teachers are urged to look beyond rote learning and discipline, and instead become guides who awaken the inner life of their pupils.
