Assumed first edition. Hardback, bound in red cloth with ornate gilt decoration to spine and upper board, repeated in blindstamp to the rear board. All edges gilt. 18.5 × 13.5cm, 312pp.

A collection of stories from history (including King Arthur), nature, whimsy etc, and illustrated throughout to amuse the Victorian child. The front panel shows four scenes in gilt of games, snow-ball fights, reading, and sport with a tree and branch design, with mistletoe pickers to the spine.

Condition

Good condition for age but with fading to the spine and rear joint, and rubbing to the corners. The front endpaper is missing, the main body of text is good clean condition but with a pages affected by light foxing. An attractive book in a nice Victorian binding but with some wear.
